Limassol hosts volleyball champions

Cyprus has been working (or rather playing) its way up in the world of volleyball. Wearlier this month, Limassol’s Olympic Beach Volleyball Training Centre hosted the Cyprus National Championship.

The two-day event saw men and women and juniors under 20 playing at the Cyprus Volleyball Federation’s venue. Visiting international players included Erika Nystrom from Finland, who has been playing professional volleyball for over 15 years; Natalia Bratuhhina from Estonia, who has played in many European championships; and Russian Mikhail Kusnetzov, a former top-rank player who participated in many world events and the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

Playing against world class players is an invaluable experience for young players. According to Cyprus’ national trainer Manolis Roumeliotis, their techniques and tactics have been improving continuously, revealing some great potential.

Prestigious events

Cyprus is now one of the leading nations in the competition group of small states of Europe and is gaining popularity and quickly becoming an important destination in the world’s beach volleyball calendar.

The outgoing director of the federation, Damianos Hadjidamianou, has played a big part in this with the hosting of and participation in many prestigious events. The Federation’s recently elected new president, Michael Krashias, aims to continue working on the sport’s journey upwards.
Cyprus has already hosted two men’s/women’s tournaments and eight junior tournaments this year plus two junior world championships in the last two years.

The August 1-2 National Championship was the last one for the season in Limassol and organisers are looking forward to another busy season starting in the summer of 2016.

The federation is currently preparing for the Junior European Beach Volleyball championship from September 2-5 in Larnaca. Details about this and past events and the Federation can be found at
