Argentinian pizza - true gourmet pizza

Argentinean pizza is truly a gourmet pizza – it is incredibly delicious and super easy to make and frequently saves me lots of time when I’m preparing for parties at Mary’s Dinner Club. It is thicker than regular pizza and many kinds do not have tomato sauce. What makes it gourmet is the toppings (and your creativity) – the most common one is with a thick onion topping. There is something slightly addictive about the combination of flavors and most likely you too will henceforth always have some stowed away in your freezer.

But you can also make a fresh one in about half an hour, so next time someone asks you what you’ll be bringing to that party, you’ll say nonchalantly, ‘Oh maybe just some quick Argentinean pizza’ – then watch the totally impressed look on the listener’s face. Argentinean gourmet pizza is different!

Argentinean gourmet pizza ingredients

  • 400 grams flour
  • 2-3 teaspoons salt (preferably herbal salt or salt + garlic powder or freshly grinded salt and a herb mix)
  • 1 packet of dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 4 tablespoons oil
  • 200 ml warm water

Making the dough of your Argentinean gourmet pizza

  • Mix the yeast and sugar in a bit of the warm water and leave in a warm place until it gets bubbly (about 15 min)
  • Mix flour, salt and oil, pour in the yeast mixture, start mixing with a wooden spoon and add the rest of the water (pour it in slowly as you may not need it all)
  • Knead to a smooth dough, put into a bowl, cover with a kitchen towel and let rest in a warm place until it doubles in size (about 30 min)

The toppings of your Argentinean gourmet pizza

  • 3 large onions, slice and sauté in vegetable oil until translucent add a teaspoon of sugar and stir until slightly golden
  • Grated cheese of your choice
  • 1 teaspoon of oregano
  • 1 can of mushrooms
  • a pinch of salt and a pinch of chili flakes (optional)

I personally find this the most delicious (and heart-warming) combination. There’s something about the combination of sweet slithery onions, chewy cheese and squeak mushrooms on that fluffy ‘bread’ with a crusty bottom that is just magical!  You can of course vary the toppings and create your own magic on top of your very own Argentinean gourmet pizza.

Getting ready to bake your Argentinean gourmet pizza

  • As Argentinean gourmet pizza is supposed to be thicker than regular pizza, you don’t roll out the dough, but push it lightly onto a lined baking tray, stretching it gently as you do.
  • Spread the cooled onions evenly onto the dough, sprinkle with salt, add the strained mushrooms, grated cheese, oregano and chili flakes.
  • Bake at 180° C for about 20 minutes and enjoy while piping hot.
