Let the race begin

A fun day out is in the making for May 22. The inaugural Cyprus Charity Motor Challenge promises a good time for all ages in the spacious, green setting of Episkopi’s ‘Happy Valley’, made available for the event by the British Base Episkopi Cantonment.

The all-day event is open to everybody and will feature a 4×4 off-road challenge, a classic car concours d’elegance, a back seat driver quiz, a family treasure hunt, a fancy dress competition with cash prizes, raffles, a kids’ zone, stalls, games, food and live music.

“Join us on a day requiring skill, stamina, intellect, cunning, a good sense of humour and a caring heart,” reads the invitation.

Organised by Limassol’s Coeur De Lion, Lions International Club and the Army Benevolent Fund all money raised by the event will go to charity.

The unusual road trip which will require participants to solve puzzles, brain teasers, overcome physical trials of skill, precision and luck welcomes any vehicle registered for road use to help raise money for great causes in Cyprus and internationally.

Three categories to enter

The three categories to enter are: The Family Treasure Hunt Challenge – open to all and taking place on public roads following a route card and answering questions within a set target time & distance (fancy dress will get bonus points), the 4×4 Off-road Challenge – a drive of approximately 2+ hours on gravel or tracks using a marked map leading to scattered check points, a Back Seat Drivers Quiz Challenge intended to keep everybody busy and a Concourse d’Elegance competition for Classic (over 30 years old) and Modern Classic Cars (over 20 but under 30).

Treats for car, chocolate and music fans

Dimi Mavropoulos from the Historic and Classic Car Museum will be bringing some of his classic cars and help judge the Concours d’Elegance. Cyprus Rally Champion Panikos Polykarpou will come in his Rally car. There will also be chocolate cars by Choco Lá for prizes, Prosecco and beer stalls and live music by The Xiles, Retro Fusion and Indigo +.

Registration and Rules

Registration desks in Happy Valley open 9am – 10.30am. Each entry will be known as a Team with its own chosen nickname, consisting of a roadworthy vehicle and the driver with a current licence and insurance for that vehicle.

The routes will require each driver to have a navigator, who can be anyone who wishes to take part. Teams can also have any normal number of passengers seated in the back – the infamous Back Seat Drivers. A registration form is available at the website Entrance to Happy Valley and the live bands is free. To enter a team in one of the ‘Challenges’ costs €15 per person or a maximum of €40 per vehicle.

Stalls holders and vendors are also invited to participate and are asked to contact the organisers.

Sponsorship is still accepted to support the event. One of the main sponsors is Cartridge World who is entering their fleet of vans for team-building activities.

“We hope to bring the Cyprus community together for a really fun event and at the same time raise mo-ney for good causes,” said one of the organising team members, ‘Lion’ Duncan Wills.

Great expectations for a unique event

In total 100 vehicles are anticipated with 400-600 entrants, helpers and attendees who are encouraged to wear fancy dress or carnival outfits to enhance the fun on the day.

The target for funds raised is €6,000 with the hope that the event will also raise awareness for the charities and good causes supported.
