On October 3, Limassol will get to experience its second TEDx event. After last year’s great success, one of the most popular conferences in the world will once again take place at the Rialto Theatre, set to inspire with a record number of 100 volunteers and a line up of 20 speakers of many different nationalities and backgrounds.

Renowned speakers
Some of the speakers will include Hollywood photographer Peter Tangen, the man behind hundreds of movie posters, who will travel from Los Angeles to give a talk on real-life super heroes while Shannon Lee, the daughter of martial arts legend, Bruce Lee, will share her mission of inspiring action of individuals through the story of her father.
The audience will also hear talks by a wildlife conservationist who is one of the top 15 best National Geographic Explorers for 2015, a researcher, engineer and creator in the domains of user experience and data science, a dramaturge, curator and thought leader specialising in body responsive technologies who has been creating live links between thousands of participants/audiences across the world, a neuroscientist who explores how the brain builds and maintains memories at the neuro-chemical level and many more.

What is TED
TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a global set of conferences run by a private non-profit organisation under the slogan “Ideas Worth Spreading”, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). It began in 1984 as a one-off conference; today conferences are held worldwide, covering almost all topics – from science to business to global issues – in more than 100 languages.

What is TEDx
Independently run TEDx events (where = x) help share ideas in communities around the world and are planned and organised by volunteers from the local community. Just like TED events, they lack any commercial, religious or political agenda with the goal to spark conversation, connection and community.
The content and design of each TEDx event is unique and developed independently, but all of them have features in common. It is a local gathering, where live TED-like talks and videos previously recorded at TED conferences are shared with the community, creating a unique atmosphere, unleashing new ideas and inspire and inform.

This year’s topic – True Heroes
The events introduction reads “Superheroes exist. They live among us. They put on their capes every day. In offices, in labs, on the sports track, in garages. Creating, designing, educating, entertaining, informing – making a true difference… They will share their ideas and inspire us to wear our own capes.”
The theme meets three of the most essential TEDTalk objectives: to democratise knowledge and science, to stimulate and arouse audiences around the world, to spark deep discussion and connections.

The Limassol core team
The organising team is a mix of enthusiastic volunteers from Limassol and Nicosia who include curator Lydia Zannettou, a media relations specialist, coordinator Nicholas Nicoli, Assistant Professor in the Department of Communications at the University of Nicosia, Cyprus and Coordinator of the Public Relations, Advertising and Marketing B.A. Programme, and presenter Theodore Anagnostopoulos, a renowned speaker, author, TEDx presenter, founder of TEDx Athens, and world traveller bringing the world of science closer to people.
There are also parallel events and volunteer coordinators, speakers’ coordinators and a speakers’ coach all pool their wide range of professional skills and experience as volunteers to promote the concept of inspiring and empowering through ideas worth sharing.
The supporting event partners are MTN, Bank of Cyprus and SigmaLive.
