10th Lemesos International Documentary Festival to take place for the tenth time from August 1 – 8

An annual event and a true tradition for local cinemagoers and documentary fans, the International Documentary Festival has been a highlight of the Cypriot summer for now ten years.  The documentary genre is becoming one of the most important works of cinema as an informed audience, is undeniably a more powerful one.


A new venue

With its increasing popularity, the festival had been filling Theatro Ena beyond capacity so this year, it is moving to a larger space with more comfortable viewing conditions: the Evagoras Lanitis Centre, next to the Limassol Medieval Castle.

The programme

The first of August is traditionally the premier night for the festival - a special date also for this writer who arrived on the island on August 1st 2010 with the festival’s opening marking her first night out. Organizers are once again expecting an interested and enthusiastic audience as 21 films have been hand picked from programmes of some of the best documentary festivals of the world, based not only on aesthetic criteria but also on the audience’s response to them. 


Highlights include:

Fredrik Gertten’s documentary Bikes Vs Cars looking into the daily global drama of traffic around the world. (Sat Aug 1, 20:30)


In The Look of Silence, Joshua Oppenheimer’s sequel to the much-praised film The Act of Killing, courageous Adi, bereaved by the Indonesian anti-communist genocide, confronts unrepentant murderers. (Sun Aug 2, 18:30)


Patsalides’s Beloved Days, is a Cypriot documentary about the people of Karmi in Cyprus who in 1970 participated in an unprecedented experience: the shooting of the film Beloved, with a Hollywood cast and crew. (Sun Aug 2, 20:30)


Brett Morgen’s documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck is a raw and visceral journey through Kurt Cobain’s life and his career with the rock band Nirvana.(Sun Aug 2, 22:30)


In We Come As Friends, the director of the acclaimed Darwin’s Nightmare, Hubert Sauper, returns to Africa to paint a picture of contemporary colonialism in both, stunning and heartbreaking ways. (Mon Aug 3, 18:30)


Andrea Culková’s Sugarblues follows one mother’s fight against the global sugar mafia. A tragicomic, vibrant and emotional story that will set you free from the Sugar Blues. (Mon Aug 3, 20:30)


Sean McAllister filmed A Syrian Love Story in over 5 years showing an incredible odyssey to political freedom in the West posing the question ‘What is the price of freedom’? (Tue Aug 4, 20:30)


The Academy Award Nominee for Best Documentary Feature The Salt of the Earth reveals the life and work of photographer Sebastião Salgado who has been travelling across the continents for the last 40 years. (Wed Aug 5, 20:30)


How to change the world, by Jerry Rothwell (who will be present at the screening), is the story of the pioneers who founded Greenpeace and defined the modern green movement. (Thu Aug 6, 20:30)


Dior and I by Frédéric Tcheng, a must-see for fashion lovers, takes the viewer inside the world of the Christian Dior fashion house. (Thu Aug 6, 22:30)


World acclaimed documentary maker Kim Longinotto’s Dreamcatcher is a colourful portrayal of a former Chicago-based prostitute who uses her experience to help young girls trapped in the vicious circle of sexual exploitation. (Fri Aug 7, 20:30)


Academy Award Winner Citizenfour, by Laura Poitras, follows the story of computer analyst Edward Snowden who leaked classified documents he had obtained from the National Security Agency detailing the extent of government surveillance of U.S. citizens. (Sat Aug 8, 20:30)

Engagement in creative dialogue

Like every year, the Festival hosts documentary professionals giving the opportunity to the local audience to meet and engage in a creative dialogue with them. Among this year’s guests, the Festival is proud to be hosting world-renowned documentary maker Kim Longinotto, who will be in Cyprus for the screening of her film, Dreamcatcher. The multi-awarded director will also deliver a masterclass on her work and generally on the art of documentary, which will be open to the public.


DocsTalk 2015

In the framework of the Festival’s parallel events, DocsTalk, a workshop for film professionals will be organized aiming to offer to Cypriot filmmakers, producers and documentary professionals, the opportunity to develop their skills and acquire a global view of the field.


Moving Docs!

For the first time this year, the Festival has joined the European programme Moving Docs, together with seven other European festivals and oganisations. Moving Docs is a partnership founded for the joint distribution of documentaries across Europe. As a new EDN initiative supported by Creative Europe, the aim of Moving Docs is to create innovative outreach strategies and provide opportunities for urban and rural European audiences to enjoy regular screenings of documentary films through a wide variety of media and platforms.
